What to expect at your appointment

In the treatment room you and your Practitioner will have a brief discussion around what brought you to the session. You will be asked to remove your watch, heavy jewelry, thick sweaters, and belt if possible. Then you will lie on your back, your side, or you may sit if that is more comfortable, fully clothed, on the treatment table. Once the session begins the Practitioner doesn’t tend to speak a lot, although you are welcome to ask questions or adjust your position at any time.

The Practitioner will start with contacting your feet. This contact is a key introduction of your Practitioner’s nervous system to yours. Then your Practitioner will likely move to the top of your head and place her hands between the back of your cranium and the table. This is when the listening begins. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapists (BCST) will never impose a pre-determined treatment plan on your body. Nor will they make contact with a body with an “intent” to create change. BCST acknowledges the inherent wisdom of each body and provides only support as the body makes the shifts required to instil balance. During this listening and support, you may become aware of heat, tingling, tapping or other sensations and you are likely to feel a deep sense of relaxation. Some people fall into a deep therapeutic rest, some have emotional releases.

Craniosacral Practitioners are trained to feel the tensions and circulations in the body which are more subtle than the heart beat or breathing with which we are all familiar.  Using a gentle, still touch your Practitioner interacts with these rhythms to support the release of restrictions. These subtle releases promote the restoration of balance and a calming of the nervous system and fascial networks and can have profound physical and psychological benefits. Your Practitioner will return to holding your feet to close the touch therapy session.

Shifts that occur on the table continue to unwind in the body in the coming days and weeks. New changes may be felt the immediately or several days after the visit. The Practitioner meets the client where they are exactly in the moment of contact and each visit is cumulative. Because it is so gentle and non-invasive, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is suitable for everyone from tiny newborns to people who are newly post surgical and people who are in palliative condition.
